June
01st 2001 will go down in the history as the darkest day of our times.The
Kingdom of Nepal witnessed the gruesome massacre of almost the entire royal
family. In a bizarre incident Nepal's Crown
Prince Dipendra killed his father King Birendra, and eight other members
of the royal family, which includes Queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah,
Princess Shruti and Prince Nirajan Bir Bikram Shah Dev, before killing himself.
The killings sparked grief, anger and confusion among the people of Nepal. Three days later Prince Gyanendra, late King Birendra's younger brother, ascended the throne. King Gyanendra, after his ascension, appointed a three-member committee to investigate the killings. The commision's report officially declared Crown Prince Dipendra as the murderer. The incident of 01st June 2001 was probably the most severe test ten-year-old democracy had faced.The nation was under tremendous grief.There were voilent protests on the streets.
There
were several arrests made.The new King
Gyanendra ascended the throne a midst tight security. During the funeral,a
huge crowd gathered to a pay final tribute to their Late King.The small nation
of Nepal gathered itself to give it's King the final farewell.The man who
had ruled the country for 30 years, who had done so much for the country and
it's people, was given a warm farewell.King Birendra had been a tremendous
king, he was a king who gave his people just about everthing they wanted,
from referendum to Democracy. And the way he died was really disheartening
to the people of Nepal. Many still haven't overcome it,and how can they ?
